Thyroid gland produces two hormones – T3 (tri-iod thyroxine) and T4 (thyroxine). These hormones control body temperature, metabolism and heart rate. The thyroid gland is controlled by the pituitary gland which is present in the brain. This releases Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH). When the balance of these hormones in the body is disturbed, then a person becomes a victim of thyroid.
In the condition of hypothyroidism, the secretion of thyroid hormone is reduced, due to which the metabolism of the body becomes impaired (slows down). Conversely, hyperthyroidism occurs when the body makes too much thyroid hormone, which accelerates the metabolism.
